M1 Broadband USB Modem

In order for me to work at Punggol Park, I will need internet connection. Otherwise, how to make a blog post to Blogger.com?
Even though there is the free Wireless@SG at Hougang Mall, I don't think there is signal at Punggol Park.
So I am looking into the M1 Broadband service using 3G and not Wi-Fi. M1 launched the service in Dec 2006 and all the modems were snapped up within a short time.
The broadband USB modem looks pretty sleek. It is compact and draws power from the computer USB port. This is great! No need to worry about replacing battery or recharging.
There are 3 usage plans:
- $22 per month / access speed up to 384kbps
- $38 per month / access speed up to 1800kbps
- $68 per month / access speed up to 3600kbps
The monthly fee includes 5GB of free data transfer. Additional bandwidth cost $4/GB. Details at M1 Broadband Plans webpage.
However, I wonder 5GB means upload and download volume or download only?
3G/HSPDA up to 3.6MbpsActually, $22 per month is affordable. But 384kbps may be too slow for someone who is used to cable broadband speed. I just have to slow down a bit when working at the park!
Anyway, I will be using it out outside CBD where the speed is up to 3.6Mbps. For the rest of Singapore island, it's 1.8Mbps maximum. So there's really no point in pay a hefty $68 per month.
5GB Free Data Bundle
I guess if I just used it to post to this blog everyday for an hour or so, 5GB is sufficient. Even it I busted the free data bundle limit, it's just $4 for an additional GB.
SIM Card and 6 Months Contract
You will have to pay $26.25 for a SIM card to be used with the USB modem. Also, you need to commit to a 6 months service contract. So you need to have about $160 including the $22 monthly fee for 6 months.
To get started, you either call 1800-8438383 or visit the M1 Shop because the online order redirects to a promotion page and then you need to "Find out how to shop"!!! So better go to one of these M1 Shops - it's probably quicker.

We all know that broadband suppliers advertise their speeds as "up to"
a certain level. But how fast is your actual connection? Now you can
find out with our broadband speed test,
use the
checker below to find out. To get accurate results make sure that you
are not using your internet connection for anything else while the test
runs (it only takes a few seconds)
thanks
